The STRAW BERRIES falls under the rose family named Rosaceae.  They are native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and are widely grown throughout the world. Scientifically, it is AKA as Fragaria ananassa and considers an ornamental plant. These plants are low-growing herbaceous plants.  Botanically, the strawberry fruit is considered an “accessory fruit” and is not a true berry. It is famous for being refreshing and tasty. Usually, the fruits are rich in vitamin C and are commonly eaten fresh as a dessert fruit.

In Bhutan, the dragon fruits are called “Tselma Tselu” and they are non-climacteric fruit, that mature and ripe on the plant itself. There are three released varieties in Bhutan such as Yusi Sagong 1 (Chandler), Pangtshalu Ngarm (Sweet Charlie), and Pangtshalu Maap (Camerosa), which are being released from 2008 to 2014. Based on BHUTAN SEEDLING's past experiences, the strawberry plants are propagated vegetatively through runners in the summer season. They can be propagated through matured seeds too.

They are observed growing well at the altitude range of 1500 to 2600 meters above sea level (MASL). However, it depends upon the micro-climate of the particular location or area. The right season for the plantation is the summer season (May-July) and early spring (February – March). Like other potted plants, the poly-potted avocado seedlings can be transplanted any season, provided that they require extensive care and on-time agronomic management.

The fruits of strawberry plants are usually eaten as raw and delicate in nature. They are considered to reputedly improves eyesight and control hypertension. The fruits are expensive in Bhutan. The current market price in the urban areas ranges from Nu. 200 to 300 per 250grams (a container).
