In Bhutan according to the Dzongkha language, this fruit is called “JAGA CHUUP” and in Tsanglakha, it is popularly called “TOLONG MAR SEY”. This fruit belongs to the family of “Passifloraceae” and is considered one of the oldest fruit grown for centuries. It is native to Brazil and India.
The passion fruits being grown in Bhutan are mostly of local varieties of two types Purple type and Yellow type. The majority of Bhutanese farmers commonly grow the purple type at the altitude range of 900 to 2000 m above mean sea level. However, yellow types are usually grown below 1000 m.
