QUICK FACTS ABOUT ASPARAGUS
Asparagus, (genus Asparagus) is a perennial vegetable that is consumed as a spring stalk. Scientifically known as Asparagus Officinalis, falls in the family of Asparagaceae. Across the globe, there are around 300 species, and it is native from Siberia to southern Africa. This perennial plant can grow up to 100-150 centimeters (40-60 inches) tall, with stout stems with much-branched, feathery foliage.
The one that is popularly grown in Bhutan is garden asparagus (Merry Washington variety), which is herbaceous in nature. This variety has an economic life span of 12 years and is considered a nutritious veggie. It can be grown in a wide range of agro-ecological zones with an elevation range of 100-2800 MASL (Meters Above Sea Level). As per the "BHUTAN SEEDLINGS" decade-long experience, asparagus saplings are recommended for transplant during the summer or early summer season. In the Bhutanese context, the summer season falls during late May, June, July, and Mid-August.
